Carré Royal Theatre was opened in 1887 by circus director Oscar Carré. Initially only the circus acts of the Carré circus took place in the building on the Amstel. When the circus was on tour, theatre performances were also given. The relevant success transformed the Carré into a theatre with all manner of public amusement.
In the period following the Second World War new discoveries such as musicals and ‘one man shows’ were also performed in Carré. Toon Hermans, and later André van Duin, were returning artists who put Carré even further on the map thanks to their successes.
At the end of the 20th century Carré experienced great success by performing musicals such as My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Annie and Evita. This period was also served as a reference for the many Dutch solo artists, whose cabaret acts led to sold-out venues. Freek de Jonge, Youp van ’t Hek, Herman van Veen and Herman Finkers stepped into the footprints of Toon Hermans, and achieved their great success in the Royal Theatre.
The theatre is easily accessible from our hotel and with public transport. The Weesperplein stop is the closest using both the metro and the tram. From 23 July there won’t be any metro trains between Amsterdam Central and Amstel station for six weeks. Take this into account when planning a possible visit to Carré.
