The Rembrandtplein is one of the most famous squares in Amsterdam and named after the painter Rembrandt van Rijn. The many terraces and other restaurants have transformed the square into a frequently visited entertainment centre. The Escape, the Cooldowncafe and Woody’s are the most famous clubs on the square.
In 1852 king Willem III revealed a large statue of Rembrandt on the former Botermarkt. In 1876 the name of the square was changed to the Rembrandtplein. Since the refurbishment in 2009 one can appreciate a broader and more organised view of the square where, according to an Amsterdam song, people can roam happily beneath the trees.
The Rembrandt statue was moved, is looking in another direction, but is still in the centre of the square. Since 2009 the group of sculptures “The Nightwatch” have found a home in front of the Rembrandt statue. These 22 bronze sculptures were made by two Russian artists, according to the world famous painting. With the new design the sculptures, which were created in 2006, were permanently added to the streetscape.
