The Hotel is owned, and has been personally run by, three generations of the Aalders family since 1955, when Jelle and Hieke Aalders moved from the northern province of Friesland to settle in Amsterdam. They bought Jan Luykenstraat Nº 15 and opened Hotel Aalders shortly after. The second generation expanded the hotel by acquiring the house next door, Nº 13, expansion celebrated by the marriage of Bart Aalders Snr (Nº 15) and Nettie, the daughter of the neighbours (Nº 13). With son Bart Aalders Jnr and daughter Sabine Aalders at its head, the third generation has been running the hotel since the 1980's, while the fourth generation has just started: always expect a member of the family to be available to ensure that your stay is comfortable and enjoyable in the best Aalders' tradition.
The Jan Luykenstraat'sneighbourhood, has 19th century charm and great allure with its typical Amsterdam style architecture adorned withJugendstilornaments. Both Aalders' houses were built in 1903-1905 and originally belonged to wealthy Amsterdam families. Although significant work has been done to join the two constructions, the Aalders family managed to keep many original details of that time which contribute to the charm of our hotel, such as the lovely breakfast room. After major refurbishment and investment over the years, Hotel Aalders achieved its current 3 star status in 1980.
Our location is ideal for cultural sightseeing and art lovers. We are situated in the cultural centre of the City, also known as the Museum Quarter where you will discover the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Concert Hall.
For the shoppers among our guests, the stylish boutiques of the P.C. Hooftstraat are just next door. In the close neighbourhood, the Spiegelkwartier displays its treasures with over 70 antique shops and fine art galleries. Amsterdam's nightlife includes many lively areas, among which are the Leidseplein, with its theatre, cinemas, casino, clubs and many bars and restaurants, or the popular up-and-coming area 'de Pijp', full of bars and restaurants. Both are within walking distance from our hotel.
For our business travellers, the RAI Convention Centre, the World Trade Centre, the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam and the Beurs van Berlage are quite easy to reach by public transport, car or taxi.
